The first program is tomorrow night (Thursday, February 24) at 7:30 p.m., and it features Ron Lawrence and Hassan Pore's controversial 2009 documentary Founding Fathers. Ego trip member Chairman Mao explains why you can't miss this one:
"Founding Fathers is a fascinating and at times controversial history of DJs/emcees/promoters in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, and their roles in hip-hop and NYC sound system culture. While the Bronx is the acknowledged birthplace of hip-hop and home to its greatest and most storied pioneers, Founding Fathers presents the largely untold story of folks like the Disco Twins, DJ Divine, DJ Lance, Nu Sounds, King Charles, Pete "DJ" Jones, DJ Hollywood, and a bunch of others who were putting it down in the other boroughs during the original school/park jam era.Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with filmmaker Hassan Pore. Also scheduled to appear: Fab 5 Freddy, the Disco Twins, DJ Lance, and DJ Divine of Infinity Machine! It gets no fresher than that, folks! See below for full event details, a clip from Founding Fathers, and the full series schedule.
"Many of those featured/interviewed in the movie challenge the notion that the BX can be solely credited with hip-hop's invention (thus making the film very controversial in certain circles). But no matter where your allegiances fall with regards to that theory, there's no disputing that the archival footage, pictures, and audio compiled here are impressive. You almost never hear anything about the BK and Queens guys from [back in the day], so this is the first serious document of that part of NYC music history."
