Apple's North Carolina-based data center will finally open its doors this spring and will support iTunes and MobileMe, said the company's chief operating officer Tim Cook during its annual shareholders meeting. This may not seem like big news, but when you pair it with rumors of Apple preparing a streaming, cloud-based version of its iTunes software, it's hard not get a little geeked.
Built to support Apple's other data center in Newark, Calif., the new $1 billion, 500,000 square-foot center was supposed to launch last fall but experienced some delays. But now that it's back on track, experts are saying it's a sure sign that Apple is going to unveil a series of cloud-based services including a streaming iTunes and a sort of "digital locker" where users can store videos, music, and pictures through its MobileME service (which may or may not become free). Get excited.
