#2: JAY SILVERHEELS AS TONTO IN THE LONE RANGER (1949-1957)
Basically the Native American version of Kato, Tonto remains one of pop culture’s most identifiable sidekicks. Intelligent and able to kick gringo ass, the horse-riding subordinate to the Lone Ranger wasn’t just some “Yes sir” number two; Tonto was arguably smarter than the hit ABC show’s masked cowboy. Even though he was heroic, Tonto’s stilted speech pattern (“Him say man ride over ridge on horse”) pissed off many Native Americans. We like to call him Talks Like Walking Stereotype.
