Doja Cat is a rapper, that much is certain. After Remy Ma said that she believed otherwise on Drink Champs a few months back, she’s now clarified her comments and explained that she thought she was giving Doja a compliment.

During a recent appearance on Black Compass, Remy was talking about wanting to bring more women in hip-hop into the battle rap space, despite saying she believes that none of them would want to get exposed on that stage. That’s when Doja’s name came up.

“Yo Remy, you tryna line up Doja Cat?” a host jokingly asked Remy at the 46:40 mark of the above video. “Don’t even bring her up,” Remy responded.

“I thought I was giving [her] a compliment,” she said of her past remarks. “Her whole entourage or fan base came for my life. I was like, ‘I thought I said something good!’”

“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” Remy said on Drink Champs. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”

Doja has adamantly defended her skills several times, tweeting a year ago that she demands respect as a rapper.

“DONT EVER FUCKIN DISRESPECT ME AS A RAPPER,” Doja tweeted at the time “AFTER THE LAST SONG I DROPPED YOU WILL RESPECT MY PEN AND THATS FUCKIN THAT. stream Very Best.”

The 2022 Grammys finally put more respect on Doja’s name after she was nominated for Best Rap Song among eight other nods. She wound up walking away with her first Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her track “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA. Doja also recently scored a whopping six BET Awards nominations, leading all artists.
