1 800 PAIN, "PEAKING"

And now, it’s time for a bonus: something completely different than any of the other songs on this list. There’s a band called 1 800 PAIN that makes music that sounds exactly like what you’d expect from a group with their name—it’s glitchy, disorienting, and it might just make your ears bleed if you listen long enough. I promise you’ll feel something, though, which is rare these days. I don’t know if I should call this “music” or just describe it as an art project that’ll probably make you uncomfortable and reconsider the meaning of your own life. If the hellish past couple of years had a soundtrack, it’s this. The band had a successful 2020 song called “Hurt” that has over 10 million plays on Spotify, and now they’re back with an album called THEIR MONEY IS YOUR MONEY. The person behind the band, who asked to remain anonymous, sent it to me in an email and said, “It’s really just about robbin the rich and doing whatever you want with the money.” I respect it. On first listen, my personal favorite song is “PEAKING,” but I encourage you to listen yourself and see which one makes you feel something. Have a good weekend, everybody. —ES
