After going dark on her socials since Christmas, Adele returned with a new Instagram post to celebrate birthday.

In it, the Grammy award-winning singer thanked her fans for the well-wishes during the pandemic.

"Thank you for the birthday love. I hope you’re all staying safe and sane during this crazy time," the singer said before turning her attention to the health care workers and essential employees.

"I’d like to thank all of our first responders and essential workers who are keeping us safe while risking their lives!" she continued. "You are truly our angels ♥️ 2020 okay bye thanks x."

But it wasn't just Adele's heartfelt caption that caught people's attention. In the post, Adele is wearing a black mini dress with her hair down, and is noticeably thinner than she was in the past. Per People, her new figure is the result of the singer's weight loss journey during which she's shed over 100 pounds. A source told the outlet that Adele achieved it by following a strict diet and fitness routine that includes cross-fit and full-body Pilates.

While some people praised her new look, others pointed out that there doesn't need to be a correlation between weight and beauty.

Can we please not celebrate Adele for losing weight like it’s the ultimate achievement? The news articles & tweets are disgusting 😬

I see that Adele is trending because people are saying how gorgeous she is since she lost weight. Y’all, we’ve been over this...

Your weight doesn’t determine your beauty. Your appearance doesn’t determine your beauty. The number on the scale doesn’t make you worthy or unworthy.

Adele losing weight doesn't mean that she wasn't beautiful at any size and complimenting her appearance now doesn't take away from that fact! Her body, her choice for how it looks. You do you, girl! Happy birthday, May sister 🥳 💃 pic.twitter.com/cEngPRbypu

But, those close to Adele tell People that her weight loss journey is deeper than aesthetics, and that she started transforming her body so that she could feel better about herself both emotionally and physically.

"It’s easy to just focus on her physical transformation, but this is really about something bigger," the source said. "She got to the point where she didn’t feel great. She knew she had to change something because she wants to be the healthiest mom possible."
