A report circulating about the master recordings from Ciara's discography being gifted to her for the holidays from husband Russell Wilson isn't accurate.
Over the weekend, a report from Media Take Out started gaining traction in which it was alleged that Wilson bought the masters from Jive and Epic. "Russell bought her the masters and gave them to her, in her name only," a "music executive" and "insider" told the gossip site, adding that the gifting took place in 2017.
However, sources close to the couple told Complex that Russell Wilson did not purchase Ciara her masters as a Christmas gift.
Last week, Ciara did say during a 2019 Makers Conference Q&A that she owned her masters. Ownership in general, she said, has "always been important" to her. "Being able to own my masters has been really cool," she said, pointing to the "freedom and flexibility" such a position gives an artist.
Ciara's most recent studio album was the Epic-released Jackie back in 2015. The album notably featured appearances from Pitbull and Missy Elliott, as well as production from Dr. Luke and Polow da Don. The album's title marked a tribute to her mother, a move she explained in an interview with W as indicative of where she was at in her life at the time.
"Even though there has been musical and personal growth, this album really takes me back in time, to when I didn't overthink the creative process," she said in 2015. The album, she added, now stands as what she feels is her strongest work to date.
