The Guitar Player in Childish Gambino's New Video Isn't Trayvon Martin's Dad

It's actually L.A.-based musician Calvin the Second.

Childish Gambino

During his double-duty gig on this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, Childish Gambino unleashed an intensely powerful video for his new record “This Is America.” The visual, which takes aim at the country’s ongoing issue with gun violence, begins with a man picking up a guitar before playing it while sitting on a chair. Many people were convinced that the individual in the opening scene was Tracy Martin, the father of slain teenager Trayvon Martin; however, it turns out that wasn’t the case.

As pointed out by The Fader, the guitar-playing man is actually Los Angeles-based musician Calvin The Second. Calvin confirmed this on Instagram shortly after “This Is America” premiered:

“Catch me in @childishgambino’s music video for his song “This Is America” (it’s a bit graphic, so don’t necessarily let your kids see it though),” he wrote. “Got the call from one of my agents while up at Coachella that they wanted me for the shoot on Sunday, drove down and got to be a part of history.”
