Lorde has come under fire for an Instagram post that many fans seemed to interpret as the 21-year-old singer poking fun at the late Whitney Houston

The post being scrutinized, which has since been deleted, was a photo of a bathtub with the caption, "And iiii will always love you," a reference to the chorus of Houston's hit "I Will Always Love You." For those unfamiliar, Houston was found dead in 2012 in her Beverly Hills hotel room submerged in a bathtub.

Since the backlash, the New Zealand-born singer has been quick to issue multiple apologies and says that what people are assuming was not at all her intention when she posted the IG photo.

"Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote," she said. "I'm so sorry for offending anyone — I hadn't even put this together I was just excited to take a bath. I'm an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again."

Despite the sincere apology, plenty of Whitney fans were quick to call out Lorde on Twitter after catching wind of her post. Others realized the honest mistake and came to her defense.

To all the people saying Lorde is cancelled bc of insta pic of the bath and the Whitney lyrics caption... people do stuff like that ALL THE TIME it was obvs just a very bad coincidence and i genuinely don’t think Lorde would do that purposefully...
