Tyrese really can’t help staying out of the spotlight. His struggles with his seemingly never-ending split from his wife Norma and ongoing custody battle for his daughter Shayla have been very public, but he’s also not exactly helping matters by speaking out about it as much as he does. Take, for example, a recent interview he gave during the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, in which Tyrese suggested he only married Norma, who is from England, so she could get a green card.
“You’re from London. I married you because we had a baby on the way and I had to do whatever I had to do so I’m not traveling all the way to London just to spend quality time with my baby,” Tyrese said during the radio interview, also adding that he was never happily married. “So now you’re running around painting this picture, like we was [whistles ‘Bridal Chorus’], like bro we got married and there was like seven people there. Like, I am the most flashiest, flamboyant dude other than Floyd Mayweather. I am the flashiest. There’s nothing about me that’s low-key and quiet. You know that I married her to keep her in the country.”
Although Tyrese is not wrong about how flamboyant and flashy he is, an anonymous source spoke to Page Six, that bastion of journalistic integrity, and claims Tyrese is just back on his bullshit. “He’s lying as always,” the source said. “He tried to get her back before he was engaged … He’s furious she wouldn’t come back to him.” Plus, marriage fraud is a felony in the U.S., so it’s unlikely Tyrese will be jumping at the chance to really stick to this story if pressed on it.
Tyrese also spoke about the shocking child abuse accusations that Norma threw at him back in September. The allegations have since been dropped, but it has been predictably difficult for Tyrese to let go. “It was the randomest, craziest thing ever,” he said. “It traumatized me forever.” He claimed in the interview that he only ever spanked Shayla twice, and once it was her mother’s bidding. Tyrese alluded to the allegations in a tearful video that he recorded in November in an attempt to see his daughter again.
For all of the drama surrounding Tyrese and his family, he recently won his court case and was granted 50/50 custody of his daughter with his former wife.
