John Mayer, noted harbinger of Very Good Tweets, made Watch What Happens Live watchable Monday night. Inevitably, Mayer's appearance resulted in discussions with host Andy Cohen regarding that Nicki Minaj tweet and Katy Perry's recent livestream experiment. These discussions were fittingly buoyed by the calming presence of Mr. Bob Fucking Saget.

"I think that portal between two people who follow each other that could be crossed by either side should be respected," he said. "Two follows does not a DM relationship make, is what I'm saying. I think we're both very responsible with the membrane that connects two people who follow each other on Twitter. Right now it's just puncturing it just to do it. If we need each other, we know we're there."

I spend an inordinate amount of time per day wondering if Nicki Minaj would like me or not.

When Mayer crafted the tweet, he had a brief moment of fame forgetfulness. "Number one, it's completely authentic, and number two, I forgot that I was a famous person and that I would find out very quickly whether or not she would like me," he said. Ultimately, Mayer felt Minaj's response was "really really kind" and victorious. "I was like, she wins," he said. "She wins that exchange. You know, she spiked the ball. It was great. You're supposed to spike the ball and I'm supposed to lose and you win, and for the most part, I thought it was cool."

Speaking on Katy Perry's fascinating livestream, Mayer revealed he checked in on it just like everyone else. "I think you'd have to watch all 96 hours to come up with the final verdict," he said. "That's her thing, man, is to go big and bold. I checked in with it. It's definitely odd to watch your ex-girlfriend to sleep."

Watching it, according to Mayer, was a foregone conclusion. "The way I see things now, I call it 'stand in the middle of the boat.' If someone says I don't watch that, it's like, yes you do. I texted Katy happy birthday, it was 4 in the morning, it was like a post-midnight, haven't gone to sleep yet, it was technically a birthday send. Because how weird is it to be like, oh, I wanna say happy birthday now but I'm going to wait until tomorrow afternoon? Just be a person, man . . . be human about it."
