Sampha won the 2017 Mercury Prize, which honors the best British album of each year.
His debut album, Process, beat out projects from runner-ups including Alt-J, Ed Sheeran, Glass Animals, Stormzy, The xx, J Hus, and more. This follows Skepta's 2016 win for Konnichiwa.
"I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents," Sampha said during the acceptance speech. "They came all the way from Sierra Leone and just wanted to give us the best upbringing possible. I'd like to thank all my brothers: Ernest, Sonny, John, and Junior for always giving me encouragement and making me believe in myself. I want to thank Jojo for putting up with all my chatter about synths and kick drums or whatever and for all the love you've shown me. I want to thank everyone at Young Turks and everyone at XL."
