This weekend's MTV Video Music Awards boasted a number of memorable performances, including a pre-show barnburner from Cardi B and a breathtaking opening medley from Video of the Year winner Kendrick Lamar. Nominee and previously announced performer The Weeknd, however, ended up missing the big event.

A report from TMZ on Monday claims the Weekend’s decision to pull out of the VMAs performance is due to tour fatigue. The Weeknd, however, has not issued an official statement on the cancelation. The Grammy-winning XO co-founder has been taking his stacked discography across the globe as part of the multi-leg Starboy: Legend of the Fall tour since February. The tour is set to pick back up again Sept. 6 at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania. The current routing keeps the Weekend on the road through the middle of December.

Just days before the MTV Video Music Awards, the Weeknd also called off a private concert at the Werkartz warehouse in Los Angeles, California. According to reports, guests to the Grey Goose Vodka-sponsored show arrived to the venue to notice stage equipment being loaded back onto the tour trucks. Simultaneously, RSVP'd guests were sent a notification confirming the performance had been canceled.

Event organizers told Variety that the plug on the private show had been pulled due to "unforeseen production issues." But sources connected to the Weekend said that proper permits had not been secured for the event.
