The worlds of emo and rap have been colliding over the past few years, and the results have often been pretty exciting. At the forefront of this is GothBoiClique, the collective viral rapper Lil Peep is a member of. However, the sound that Peep worked hard to make big had been circulating for a while before that, most notable with GBC's co-founder Adam McIlwee, better known as Wicca Phase Springs Eternal.
Gaining attention through collaborations with Corbin, who was then known as Spooky Black, Wicca Phase combined the worlds of rap and emo in ways most hadn't heard before. Atop forlorn trap production, his distinctive vocals made him an instant cult favorite. Now he's gearing up to release a new EP entitled Raw and Declawed, removing the rap elements and focusing purely on the emo side of things with his most stripped-back project in a while.
After sharing "Icebreaker" from the upcoming EP, he's now sharing a new song that offers another taste of what we can expect from the skeletal sound he's going for. While "Icebreaker" started its life as a Tigers Jaw song, which is the emo band he was in before going solo, "Don't Get Me Started" is a more recent track. Slowing things down further, "Don't Get Me Started" distils Wicca Phase's sound to its most basic, and most striking.
Speaking about the song over email, Wicca Phase told us how it came to be, explaining, "'Don’t Get Me Started' was originally a Wicca Phase song produced by Brobak, but Lil Peep ended up recording over it first with Pollari and it became their song, 'Fantasy.' I don’t have a lot of time to write songs and I liked the vocal melody and lyrics so I decided to repurpose them and turned them into an acoustic song instead. It’s a follow up to my Stop Torturing Me EP. The message is simple: 'leave me alone to my girlfriend’."
