Taxstone pleaded guilty to federal gun charges related to the fatal 2016 Irving Plaza shooting. Taxstone admitted to possessing a firearm as a felon and receiving a firearm in interstate commerce, the New York Daily Newsreported. Taxstone, whose real name is Daryl Campbell, now faces up to 20 years.
The shooting took place May 25, 2016 ahead of T.I.'s headlining performance. Shots were fired at approximately 10:15 p.m., the New York Timesreported at the time. "Right when [T.I.] was about to go on I heard two gunshots, and right after, there was a stampede," Ayo Fagbemi, a college student who attended the show, said. "There were at least three rounds, but after the second one was when people started running."
Ronald McPhatter, Troy Ave's bodyguard, was killed in the crossfire. Ave and two other people were injured. Taxstone was not hit with a federal murder charge, but the Daily Newsreported Thursday that the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office told a judge that he brought a weapon to the venue and "fired one shot that killed Ronald McPhatter." Prosecutors contend that Taxstone's DNA was discovered on the weapon used during the fatal shooting.
Back in January, Taxstone was denied a $500,000 bond after prosecutors convinced the judge that he "posed a danger to the community." Initially, another judge had agreed to free Taxstone on bond and house arrest.
