"I sang a little softer, wrote some stranger lyrics than I would usually, I suppose," a sleepy Mac DeMarco told Zane Lowe about the latest single from his new album This Old Dog. "I just tried to keep it as sexy as I could."

A silky, synth-heavy jam, "On the Level" finds Mac in a quiet, introspective mood as he sings melancholic lines like, "Boy, this could be your year / Make an old man proud of you / Forget about the tears."

I had bought a new synthesizer," DeMarco says. "A Roland D-50, great keyboard. Sitting in the room I have that I was doing everything in, in California at my house now. And kind of just started tickling it a little bit and pressed record. The lyrics came afterwards, but the instruments were just, 'hey, there you go. there they are.'"
