Dancehall artist Popcaan kicked off what may prove to be a month full of holiday music with his latest single, the appropriately named “Christmas Gift.” The “Unruly” singer doesn’t leave much to the imagination, referencing his desired woman as his Christmas gift. So while the Naughty Boy single “Should’ve Been Me,” which also features Popcaan and Kyla, may find its way to Top 40 radio, the same can’t be said of “Christmas Gift” without some heavy edits.
“Me a wonder if you catch my drift/Your pussy is my Christmas gift,” Popcaan chants. The track is primarily carried by producer Ainsley “Notnice” Morris. Throughout the single, Notnice weaves in high-pitched synths, while Popcaan handles the (Auto-Tuned) vocals.
While already established in his native Jamaica, Popcaan has seen increased popularity stateside thanks to tunes such as the original version of Drake’s “Controlla” and Snoop Dogg’s “Lighters Up.”
Popcaan came to Drake’s defense earlier in 2016 when fellow dancehall artist Mr. Vegas criticized Drake for sampling reggae artists without giving them proper credit.
“Don’t try and violate my brother, now,” Popcaan said, in a viral video directed at Mr. Vegas. “You don’t know anything about Unruly or OVO.”
