Kevin Gates won’t stop. Just hours after three police officers were fatally shot in Baton Rouge, La., the 30-year-old New Orleans rapper went to Instagram with another round of controversial posts. One of which is an image taken from CNN’s coverage of the shooting, which Gates captoned: “N***a finally stood up- The officer said there was no talking - Just shooting - key word no talking!!!” He has since deleted the post.
He followed up with several videos in which he declared his support for the violence against police: “I’m not against black people, I’m not against white people. I stand for what’s right. A bunch of n****s jumping around hooping and hollering ain’t right,” he said in what many assume was a reference to the Black Lives Matter movement. “But if we’re going to go to war, we need to go to war for what’s right […] I stand for what’s right. Us talking and all that, that ain’t right. But how they stood up in Baton Rouge, I can salute that.”
His wife, Dreka Gates, also went to Instagram with comments that echoed her husband's. She mentioned how she was once handcuffed by police for no reason and was forced to stand in 40 degree weather while she was five months pregnant. In a video posted by Gates, Dreka can be heard saying she used that story to prove how she’s also been a victim; however, just like her husband, she refuses to join the Black Lives Matter movement because she doesn’t believe it pertain to her or her family.
“I'm not pro police, pro blacks, pro whites, I'm for what's right and against what's wrong...on ALL matters. What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong,” she wrote in a caption. “I sort of regret posting what I just posted about being handcuffed, because you guys don't truly understand what it means to REALLY STAND for something.”
