Though they hail from different parts of the country, walk different professional paths, and employ their own distinct blends of jargon and rhetoric, DJ Khaled and Tony Robbins speak the same language—the language of motivation. Of success. Of excellence. And now, for the first time, they get to speak as the peers they are, brought together by Complex.

Regular readers of course know DJ Khaled as the hero of Dade County with a special gift for connecting musical talent. Across nine albums, he’s orchestrated great group cuts like “All I Do Is Win,”“I’m on One,”“Brown Paper Bag,” and “I’m So Hood,” to name but a few. Beyond music, he’s a coiner of 21st century aphorisms like “Don’t ever play yourself” and “They don’t want me to have another anthem, so I made sure I got another anthem,” which is flexible and can be modified to reflect any sort of achievement in the face of adversity and doubt.

Robbins, as some of our younger readers may need reminding, is a professional motivator and author with over 30 years of experience. The titles of his books explain his mission: Unlimited Power, Awaken the Giant Within, Money: Master the Game. Each warrants, to use a turn of phrase from Khaled, a major key alert. Recently, he appeared in a Netflix documentary entitled Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru.

Under the guiding hand of A1 conversationalist and writer Mary H.K. Choi, Khaled and Robbins connected in Los Angeles for the most inspirational interview ever. The photographs, shot by Emily Shur, capture these two lions as they engage in the kind of “special cloth” talk that should be private but is revealed here, in all its premium exclusivity.
