James Lavelle's iconic and recently-revived Mo' Wax label is a justifiably revered outlet for electronic music and has been for some time, having put out landmark releases by the likes of DJ Shadow and UNKLE. Now, in 2015, the reinvigorated label is reminding us all why they have such a solid reputation. The latest release they've announced is the upcoming debut album Once Smitten (out Feb. 26 in collaboration with Marathon Artists) from Elliott Power, a release which casts its gaze forward while acknowledging the classic trip-hop sound of the '90s. "Sword Souls", in particular, features some of the sound's staple elements like the low-slung hip-hop beats, the dubby inflections, and Power's own breathy, spoken-word style. But this isn't retro or nostalgia—Power injects the track with some icy synths and experimental touches to bring things right into 2016. Fans of Mumdance and Massive Attack alike will find plenty to love in this one.
