In Complex's new documentary series, F1RST, we will take a look at the journey and untold stories behind some of our favorite acts. For our inaugural episode, we kick things off with a four-part series on the enigmatic Jeremih.

Jeremih's story starts in Chicago where the unknown singer launched his career in 2009 after creating an R&B smash and Top 5 Billboard hit with "Birthday Sex." Although he grew up singing, when he initially started making music he took inspiration from fellow Chicagoan Kanye West and aspired to be a rapper. But of course, he ended up singing. And when "Birthday Sex" blew up, he knew he had to ride the wave.

You can watch the video above and be sure to check out each episode of Jeremih's F1RST this week on Complex.
