Janelle Monáe has never been one to shy away from sharing her opinions. Last month, the singer stopped by NBC's Today Show to perform "Hell You Talmbout," which she followed with a candid interview about police brutality, Earlier this week, she sent a personal e-mail to the White House's official mailing list, titled "More Important than a Selfie." In the letter, she expressed that as an artist, there's nothing more important to her than her voice and that voting gives everyone a way to speak out.

"There was once a time when young African-American women like myself did not get the opportunity to vote. They simply could not," Janelle wrote. "I think about that every time I go to the polls to exercise that fundamental right—not just to honor those who fought so I could have it, but because, simply put, I know that this is an essential part of our democracy."

The note was the first of many efforts from the singer and White House to try and reach the 50 million currently unregistered American voters. You can read the full note here.
