Van Hill is a relative newcomer to the 6ix side scene, but make no mistake—the previous year was the quiet before the storm for the Toronto-born, Brampton-raised emcee. You’re looking at a storyteller with a laid-back snarl and an expressive pen game, and his take-no-prisoners approach is perfectly in line with the dark, brooding sound making waves in Toronto right now.

Once a playground poet, Van Hill (born: Patrick Thompson) found an outlet in creative writing near the end of high school. The decision to grind full time on music came in just 2013, but in that short time, he’s already established a cohesive sound with a mixtape and a handful of Soundcloud loosies. “Yesterday” might be Van Hill’s strongest output to date, seeing the wordsmith battle a twisted, gloomy beat by producer Lucian. Van is no rush—his flow coils around Lucian’s beat at its own pace, offsetting the harsh trap vibes for something a little more ethereal.

For Van Hill, “Yesterday” is a concept more than a date and time. "Do you ever catch yourself thinking about yesterday? Not yesterday literally, but yesterday as in not today? That's what this is about, reminiscing on yesterday, hoping for the future, and loving the moments of today,” he told Complex.
