Some exciting Monday morning news: Joanna Newsom is returning with a new album for the first time in five years! "Sapokanikan" is the first single/video she's shared, and the beautiful song is a welcome return. Watch the singer gleefully prance around New York City, through the cinematic lens of acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson. The pairing makes sense: Newsom previously narrated and starred in Anderson's film Inherent Vice last year. (As she walks past a fire truck towards the end of her video, the neon glow may remind you of that very movie.) Though musically we haven't heard from Newsom in a while (not since 2010's Have One on Me), homegirl's been keeping busy: guest-starring in film and TV (Portlandia), playing with Neutral Milk Hotel, and enjoying her newlywed life with husband Andy Samberg.
But now she's back, and her fourth full-length Divers is out Oct. 23 (via Drag City). Recorded by Steve Albini and Noah Georgeson, Divers will feature arrangements from Newsom, Nico Muhly, Dave Longstreth (Dirty Projectors), and Ryan Francesconi.
