It should come as no surprise that the guy behind one of the low key best rap verses of 1997 would eventually slay a Beyoncé cover in the weird, wild year of 2015, but — for some — it does. Third Eye Blind, for the unschooled, often get unfairly categorized among the sad, thankless world of '90s nostalgia acts like Sugar Ray, Lit, Smash Mouth, and Zoot Boots — bands so irrelevant that you didn't even realize I made that last name up entirely.
Third Eye Blind, through the hyper-literate lyricism of frontman Stephan Jenkins and a continual distancing from those aforementioned nostalgia acts, have managed to successfully transcend decade and genre — a balancing act reflected nicely in their take on Beyoncé's "Mine," a tastefully reimagined cover that sadly doesn't include Drake.
We'll see your Beyoncé cover, Stephan — and raise you one "Trap Queen."
