Apple Wants Record Labels to Stop Streaming for Free on Spotify

The Department of Justice is investigating.

Apple is looking to get ahead in the music streaming arms race with the relaunch of Beats Music, but the company has reportedly gotten a little too aggressive. The Department of Justice is investigating Apple for pushing major music labels to stop streaming their music for free on Spotify, The Verge reports. Sources also say the company has lobbied for Universal Music Group to take its music down from YouTube.

The European Union’s Competition Commission is also looking into Apple trying to crush free streaming services, according to the New York Post. "There is concern in the industry that Apple, with its enormous market share and distribution power and what it can do in terms of pricing and promotion can have an unfair competitive advantage," a music industry executive told the paper.

Another industry source told The Verge, "All the way up to Tim Cook, these guys are cutthroat."
