Listen to Michael Uzowuru's "April 13th" f/ Vic Mensa and Donnie Trumpet

Vic Mensa's right-hand producer is branching out on his own now.

Michael Uzowuru is liberating a track that sees himself and Vic Mensa go back to basics. Titled "April 13th" to allude to the first time the pair met, the track hears Mensa detail the morning after for a young Los Angeles artist—it's a lightly voiced track, with delicate moments of spastic rapping intertwined with more tender and solemn lyrics of, "leave it up to the morning." "I woke up in a butterfly's cocoon covered in cosmic full of dust," Mensa raps as he pursues his flame from the previous night.

There's a great confluence between sound and substance here—Mensa's tone and lyrics flow easily into the beat. Uzowuru's production has heavy bass drops, a ticking trap drum sound, and intricate guitar work, while Donnie Trumpet sprinkles some of his own trumpet work throughout. "April 13th" is well-conceived and wonderfully balanced debut collaboration from Uzowuru and Mensa.
