Teklife is the crew of DJs and producers that make up the A-team of Chicago's booming footwork scene. DJ Rashad's Double Cup was widely noted as one of the best albums of 2013. Member names run heavy on the tracklist of iconic London label Hyperdub’s 10 Year Anniversary compilations scheduled for release in May. One of the shining tracks on the beloved Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack is a contribution from Teklife’s Heavee called “It’s Whack,” featuring DJ Rashad.
Today, Heavee releases a brand new single in partnership with NYC’s now-infamous GHE20G0TH1K parties. “GMS” is the first free release from the GHE20G0TH1K family that will be dropping remixes, original tracks and mixes from a list of their collaborators who have played parties since its inception in 2009. A powerful first release, “GMS” is indicative of Heavee’s unique style. Born to a family of musicians in Chicago’s South side, he blends soulful influences and unlikely samples into the footwork music he lives and breaths. A former dancer with the footwork crew “Animosity,” his mastery of the sound likely has a lot to do with his complete immersion in footwork culture.
Stay tuned for future releases from Heavee; he’s working on music with DJ Earl, DJ Spinn and Rashad. You can also check out two previous digital albums Nu Wave (Self-Released) and the Altitude EP (T3) to tide you over until his next drop.
Update: Catch Heavee live in NYC at GHE20G0TH1k on April 25 alongside Rizzla, Ian Isaiah, Danii Phae, J-Cush and residents VenusX and $hayne. The date was originally listed as April 19. Tickets purchased for the original date will be honored on 4/25.
