Compton rapper YG has been drawing widespread praise for his new album, My Krazy Life, which he released last week and which many people (Complex included) are highlighting as a reboot of classic West Coast gangster rap. With so much hype behind it, the album performed well on the charts this week, edging out new releases from Foster the People and Skrillex to take the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200.
YG tweeted the news last night, adding that the album landed at No. 1 on the Rap Albums chart. Billboard reports he sold 61,000 copies of his debut album. Skrillex's Recess landed at No. 4, and Kevin Gates's digital release By Any Means entered the chart at No. 20. Despite the accolades, though, YG couldn't quite knock off the juggernaut that is Disney's Frozen soundtrack, which stayed at No. 1 with more than 202,000 copies sold thanks to the movie's release on DVD. YG weighed in on his performance on Twitter:
If it wasn't for thatt fukin frozen album I woulda had the #1 album on billboard top 200 too lol. It's Bool doe
Very chivalrous of him to let it go.
