There are many events in rap history that are either unknown or forgotten, from album releases to deaths to random ass events most of us can't even recall. As an attempt to remember those moments, Complex will share an event that helped shape hip-hop in a sometimes minor, sometimes major way. Join us as we look back on This Day in Rap History.
March 13, 1999
In 1999, Eminem was blowing the fuck up. And as the rapper rhymed on "I'm Back," "MTV was so friendly to me." On March 13, 1999 MTV News premiered a feature on Em as they visited his childhood home and met his best friend Proof (RIP). As part of the feature, the two tag-team rapped for MTV over the span of four and a half minutes. While they weren't Em's most jaw-dropping lines, it's still an entertaining freestyle thanks largely to Em and Proof's chemistry. In 8 Mile, the 2002 film loosely based on Eminem's life, there's a scene similar to this one with Em's character Rabbit rapping with his best friend.
