Scott Asheton, legendary drummer of The Stooges, has died earlier today. Asheton, one of the founding members and the only drummer of the band throughout its run, was 64. Outside of The Stooges, he served as drummer for Sonic's Rendezvous, Scot's Pirates, Sonny Vincent's Rat Race Choir, and Rock Action.

The Stooges' frontman Iggy Pop has released the following statement reacting to the news:

My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton's have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

The cause of Asheton's death has thus far not been disclosed.
