FOX News' Bill O'Reilly, a self-proclaimed critic of "harmful entertainment marketed to unsupervised children," recently brought rap mogul Russell Simmons on his show to discuss this "harmful entertainment," including the burlesque-influenced video for Beyoncé's "Partition."
O'Reilly's recrimination of Bey starts innocently enough, calling her performance of the National Anthem at the 2004 Super Bowl in Houston "brilliant," but he is quick to note that her new album has a song that, "glorifies having sex in the back of a limousine." He goes on to say, "Teenage girls look up to Beyoncé, particularly girls of color. I'm saying, Why on earth would this woman do that? Why would she devastation that unwanted pregnancies [...]and fractured families, why would Beyoncé do that?"
As always, you should watch the entire clip for the full dose of O'Reilly's half-infuriating, half-hilarious hyperbolic hip-hop hatred, but let's just break down his initial attack:
- Is having sex in the back of a limousine actually an epidemic that is plaguing America? How often are we hearing about this? Never? Oh right, that's because rich people can do whatever they want and no one is ever the wiser.
- If we continue to take this album as biographical notes, then we know that this song is about her husband. Maybe we don't need to know all the gory details (word to Monica Lewinsky) about what the two of them are doing while in transit, but this song is ostensibly promoting martial sex. And promoting it as a thing that doesn't have to get stale.
- The only thing truly reckless is that they're obviously not wearing seat belts in the song. Again, people in limos don't have to wear seat belts, but O'Reilly seems to think anything that they do back there is influential. Bill, I beseech you, tell the children to buckle up! Think about the families!
Ugh. Let's just never hope no one ever makes him aware of "Drunk in Love." It's the most perfect song ever written and it's already been remixed to death anyway.
