There are many events in rap history that are either unknown or forgotten, from album releases to deaths to random ass events most of us can't even recall. As an attempt to remember those moments, Complex will share an event that helped shape hip-hop in a sometimes minor, sometimes major way. Join us as we look back on This Day in Rap History.
February 22, 1989
At the 31st annual Grammy Awards on February 22, 1989, the Best Rap Performance category made its debut. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince won for their single “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” Controversy surrounded the duo’s win, who boycotted the awards show because the new rap award wasn’t televised. After the 1990 Grammys, the award was split into two categories, Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Solo Performance by a Duo or Group.
