The 2014 MTVu Woodie Awards will take place Thursday, March 13 in Austin, Texas during the SXSW Music Festival, and Childish Gambino is the first performer to be announced on the event's lineup. The 30-year-old rapper is fresh off the success of his sophomore album Because the Internet, which garnered critical and commercial acclaim in 2013. Gambino is also nominated in the "Did It My Way Woodie" category. His competition in the category includes Kanye West, Beyoncé, Arcade Fire, and Bob Dylan.
Prior to the 10th annual MTVu Woodie Awards, Chicago rapper Vic Mensa and the Jack Antonoff-helmed band Bleachers will be performing at the MTVu Woodie Awards Festival also on Thursday, March 13. “I’m super stoked to be playing the Woodies festival this year,” Vic Mensa says. “I’m crowd surfing through everything so the girls better get their swimsuits ready.” Both the MTVu Woodie Awards and Festival are open to SXSW badge holders over the age of 18.
A televised version of the MTVu Woodie Awards will premiere on MTV on Sunday, March 16 at 8 p.m. (EST). Past performers include N.E.R.D., Lupe Fiasco, Vampire Weekend, Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, and Mac Miller. You can vote for your favorite MTVu Woodie Awards nominees on their official website.
