Occupation: Co-founder of Ruthless Records and former manager of N.W.A.
Why we hated them: Because he broke up N.W.A, also because Ice Cube and Dr. Dre told us to
Lyrical shoutout: "And I'd have seen Snoop give away Eddie Bauer's/So fuck Jerry Heller and the white superpowers." - Ice Cube on "Chin Check"
Jerry Heller is easy to hate. Especially if you're Dr. Dre or Ice Cube, both of whom felt that they didn't get their fair share of money (Cube) or share of Ruthless Records (Dre) from Heller and his partner Eazy-E. It's easy to hate Jerry Heller when Dre and Cube tell you to because it's funny in a video, or sounds good lyrically, or the beat is undeniable.
Heller is an easy target too for fans of Cube or Dre because he symbolized the reason that Cube and Dre left N.W.A. in the early 1990s. Bandwagon rap fans, too, see Heller as the crooked Jewish man who destroyed the first gangsta rap supergroup, rather than the music man (who helped guide the careers of Elton John, Pink Floyd, Journey, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ike & Tina Turner and so many more) who gave Dre, Cube, Eazy, Ren and Yella a shot, and later established the groundwork for Dre and Cube's long and successful careers.
It's so easy to hate on Jerry Heller that artists like Nelly, Tim Dog, and The Game have thrown shots in songs, having never even met Heller in real life. In a podcast with Ted Stryker, Heller says that while he hasn't run into Cube since he left Ruthless, he sees Dre, Dre's mother, and Dre's family all the time, and everyone has good will with each other. So maybe it's easy to not hate Jerry Heller too.
