The Steve McQueen-directed 12 Years A Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, has been racking up accolades in recent weeks (Complex's included). There could be an equal measure of praise coming for its soundtrack, which has enlisted artists like John Legend, Gary Clark Jr. and Cody Chestnutt to offer takes on both traditional and original songs.

One of the centerpieces is John Legend's rendition of the classic spiritual "Roll Jordan Roll." He's faithful to the song's gospel origins, delivering the melody a cappella with a backing choir. It's a moving performance and definitely a mode some fans might not be as familiar with. Check it out, though, kids—this is musical history being preserved.
