Nelly has been quietly (at least to rap fans) killing 2013. He has an awesome minimal rap single with Nicki Minaj and Pharrell, the best Auto-Tuned bubblegum pop song of the year, "Hey Porsche" and the best Auto-Tuned country song of the year, the remix to Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise." That song's been at the top of the Billboard country chart for months—setting a record as the longest No. 1 in country history—and it's sold more than 5 million units.
Suffice it to say that while you may not have checked in on Nelly since his Nellyville days, he's still doing quite well, which means, apparently, that he gets a blockbuster budget for his new album (or those early '00s albums still give him some leverage). Seriously, look at the lineup here! Nicki Minaj, Pharrell, Future, T.I., 2 Chainz, Trey Songz, Pharrell and T.I. again, Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa, Nelly Furtado, Yo Gotti and, of course, Florida Georgia Line all make appearances.
Either those features were the only way the label could salvage this and turn it into something resembling a rap album, we're about to hear 2 Chainz on a country song or M.O. (named for Nelly's home state, naturally), is going to be absolute fire. Or all three! Or it will be terrible, but redeemed by "Hey Porsche." No matter what, we will still be free to no longer shake our tailfeathers but instead "Shake Whatever."
