In a recent interview with Hot 97's Funkmaster Flex, 50 Cent addressed Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse where the Compton rapper declared himself "King of New York."

50 says he got a phone call from Top Dawg Entertainment's CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith just after the record was released, and he gave them his blessing. "When you listen to what [Kendrick's] saying on the record, it's a breath of fresh air for me," 50 says. "He's saying there's no more 'kumbaya my Lord,' where everybody's not sitting by the campfire being friends."

"The competitive energy, that's necessary for hip-hop. That's what it is," he continues. "We can smile and take pictures, but then you know that the next presentation the person's gearing up for is supposed to shake everything. If yours ain't right, bye bye."
