Eminem teased his new song "Berzerk" last night in a Beats By Dre commercial, from which a thousand opinions have already accumulated, and tonight he premiered the full version on his SiriusXM channel, Shade 45.
The track itself samples Billy Squier's "The Stroke."
The facts, though, are that his album, MMLP2, is executive produced by Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin, the latter of whom may have to do with the Beastie Boys-referencing sound of "Berzerk." Long ago, on the Slim Shady LP, Em rapped about being compared to the Beasties: "Got bitches on my jock out in East Detroit/'Cause they think that I'm a motherfucking Beastie Boy. So I told them I was Mike D."
It will certainly be interesting to see the direction he takes on the sequel to his acclaimed 2000 LP. The man is now 40, and he once rapped: "But when it's all said and done I'll be 40 before I know it with a 40 on the porch tellin' stories/With a bottle of Jack, two grandkids in my lap." Come to think of it, he said that on the last Marshall Mathers LP. Let's all get excited to find out how close that prediction was.
Well, he certainly took it back somewhere, and perhaps the most MMLP aspect of the song is when he wakes up in a Monte Carlo with "the ugly Kardashian." Other than that it sounds, unsurprisingly, like an aggressive Beastie Boys record. What do you think of Em's new direction?
