20 Underrated Jay-Z Songs

Jay-Z f/ Memphis Bleek & Sauce Money "What The Game Made Me" (1998)

Album: I Got the Hook Up Soundtrack
Label: No Limit/Priority
Producer: Chris Lidjio

No Limit's first theatrical film, I Got The Hook-Up, was released right as the label was at its unstoppable peak as a commercial force, and the platinum soundtrack showed No Limit surveying the regional rap landscape, with guests representing Memphis, the Bay Area, and Texas in addition to the usual No Limit Soldiers. Only two tracks featured New Yorkers, however: an ODB collaboration with Mystikal, and a killer track from Jay and two of his top lieutenants, rocking a Reasonable Doubt-style beat that makes no effort to fit in with its surroundings. This was a good six months before Jay's more famous nod to the booming New Orleans movement, the remix to Juvenile's "Ha," and a year before a proper Jay-Z/No Limit collaboration, a scene-stealing verse on Silkk The Shocker's "You Know What We Bout." —Al Shipley
