Lester Chambers was one of the lead singers of The Chambers Brothers, the 1960s soul rock group responsible for hits like the 11-minute song, "Time Has Come Today." The Chambers Brothers' work became anthems of the anti-war and Civil Rights movements of the '60s.
Today, we've learned that Chambers was attacked on stage after performing Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready"—a song The Chambers Brothers covered years ago—in dedication to Trayvon Martin. Apparently, the 73-year-old legend told the audience that if Curtis Mayfield was still alive, he'd change the lyric "There's a train a comin'" to "There's a change a comin."
While on stage at the Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival in California, 43-year-old Dinalynn Andrews Potter rushed the stage and according to a report filed by friend and musician Kurt Crowbar Kangas yelled something along the lines of, "It’s all your fault” before hitting him.
Chambers' son posted a photo on Facebook confirming that his dad was recovering at home after suffering a "bruised rib muscle and nerve damage."
