No single artist played a more integral role on Jay-Z's new album Magna Carta Holy Grail than Timbaland. Producing over half of the project and supplanting his innovative sound throughout, Timbo and Jay recaptured the spark that was found on past tracks like "Big Pimpin'" and "Hola' Hovito."
However, their relationship in recent years wasn't the best, as Jay-Z explained to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe. Detailing their issues that stemmed from working on The Blueprint 3 in 2009, Jay said they weren't able to see eye to eye in the studio.
"The fallout happened at the end of The Blueprint 3. It really happened the way the album happened; a couple songs were getting leaked and that was his song, and it just ruined the whole process," Jay-Z said. "Kanye, who was the executive producer of Blueprint 3, was like, 'Yo, let’s get Tim!' We were all inviting to him and he just wasn’t accepting of the process. It seemed like it was more about him than the actual album."
Jay-Z says time eventually healed their relationship, as he witnessed Timbaland's growth as an individual. "I’d seen the new Timbaland; he had this maturity and this growth that I was like, 'Okay, this is gonna work out'."
Jay-Z also announced he will be embarking on the "Magna Carta" European tour in October. The 15-date trek includes performances in Manchester, London, and Paris, and will finish up October 29 in Amsterdam.
