Album Stream: Thundercat "Apocalypse"

Los Angeles bassist/singer Thundercat will be releasing his sophomore set, Apocalypse, on June 4, but NPR has the early jump on the album.

Executively-produced by Flying Lotus (with contributions from label mates Mono/Poly) Apocalypse has enough funk and attitude to bring back Soul Train. It nestles itself between experimental and menacingly melodic, with Thundercat’s voice riding the grooves with dauntless command.

Thundercat also delves into a handful of tranquil moments, like the album-ending “A Message for Austin.” The track is dedicated to his pianist Austin Peralta, who passed in the fall of 2012. Thundercat has described the unfortunate incident as inspiration for the creation of Apocalypse.
