The 50 Best Rap Songs by Women

25. Monie Love "Monie In The Middle" (1990)

Album: Down to Earth
Monie Love had the perfect set-up. She stood out as one of the first British MCs to make waves in the States, she was featured on Queen Latifah's Grammy-winning "Ladies First," and she was down with the Native Tongues movement. A culmination of these events led to the success of her solo jam, "Monie in the Middle." The record finds Love over a jazzy instrumental, passing notes to boys in a high school setting, and calling the shots in her dealings with men. It was later nominated for a Grammy, solidifying her efforts as one of the first commercially viable female rappers. —Ernest Baker
