Hip-Hop Station KDAY Switches Formats

Another one bites the dust...again.

Hip-hop station KDAY is changing its format to Chinese language-only; the station is being sold to RBC Communications (along with another station) for a reported $19.5 million.

The station first made news in the early 1990s, when it helped pave the way for g-funk to become the nation's dominant hip-hop sound. Since that time, the station has gone back and forth between formats; the Franklin Avenue website has put together a brief history of the many changes the station has gone through over the years.

Just last year, the LA Weekly profiled the station's retro-gangsta rap format; at the time, the station was optimistic about the format's potential for expansion.
