In a recent Huffington Post interview, Diplo had a lot to say about today's EDM scene, and he while he didn't name names, he definitely pulled no punches. You'd think that a guy who basically created his own lane with Mad Decent wouldn't even be bothered with discussing the affairs of major label politics, but it looks like the move to Secretly Canadian for the release of Major Lazer's Free the Universe might have been due to politics with Interscope:
"Interscope dropped Major Lazer when we asked for money for a video for 'Get Free,' and we sold 150,000 copies of that song... So that just proves that labels have no idea what's going on anymore. They just want to jump on EDM dick -- shit that sucks because they don't feel the music but think it's happening. We are in these streets."
While we're not sure what streets Diplo's referring to, he was far from done. When speaking on what makes Major Lazer stand out, he provided what's probably his most biting commentary on the current state of EDM:
"Dance music is so interchangeable. There's not a lot of face to it. It's a bunch of Dutch DJs with the same haircut. You go see a dance stage at a fucking dance festival and I'm bored out of my fucking mind. That's not going to last very much longer, because kids see that it's the same shit every single time."
DAD can only hope that the "kids" will smarten up and demand more... although when you look at the crowds at the Ultra Music Festival, we have a hard time believing that things are going to be changing anytime soon. No matter what you say, the dollar speaks louder than any comments on the Internets or in publications.
