R&B has grown noticeably hazy since Frank Ocean and The Weeknd got hold of it. Now, it isn't so much about belting out notes; instead, singers can let the notes consume them for similar impact.

On the recently released Magique, Chicago R & B group Jody opts for woozy vocals and glossy West Coast synths, resulting in a smokey mixture that rests between hollow G-funk and atmospheric sheen. The vocals are largely hidden behind faint drums and high-pitched squeaks. These songs feel nostalgic, yet very much in the now. It's the first of three EPs leading up to Jody's full-length album.
