The 50 Greatest Sophomore Albums in Hip-Hop History

37. Slick Rick, The Ruler's Back (1991)

Label: Def Jam, Columbia, SME

For a project that was rushed together prior to Slick Rick going to jail for his own "Children's Story" antics, The Ruler's Back does a good job of carrying on right where The Great Adventures of Slick Rick left off in terms of sound and content. Despite the fact that the deceptively titled "I Shouldn't Have Done It" has nothing to do with his legal troubles, this record contained all the storytelling, catchy beats, and off-key singing for which MC Ricky D was known. Job well done.
