10 Music Industry Heads Who Should Be A&Rs

Q

Organization: WorldStarHipHop
Instrumental in the rise of: Max B, Riff Raff, French Montana, Lil B

Everybody hates Q and everybody hates WSHH but everybody pays attention to it. Why? Because Q knows what people want to see. It’s not clean, it’s not good for the community, and it’s terrible for society. There was a video on there recently with these girls sucking dick on the train and she goes, ‘I just wanna suck cock!’ I bet she feels she can say that because she goes on WSHH every day. Every time any one of us see a fight, we reach for our camera phones, start recording, and yell out, ‘Worldstar! Worldstar!’ Now that just makes him a great businessman, but I’ll tell you why he deserves to be an A&R.

They aren’t picking the most lyrical rappers, they’re picking characters. I don’t like Lil B or Riff Raff’s music at all, but if you sign them to a label they’re going to make money.

First of all, Max B would not be as popping without WSHH. Max B was seen as Jim Jones’ artist until someone like Q saw him. Q definitely has people around him who bring artists to him. But so what? Top A&Rs find talent all the time through other people or “consultants.” That’s how it works: These big name dudes are too busy to pay attention to what’s on the street level so they got dudes that do that for them.

Q was early on French Montana. French wouldn’t have gotten started without Q. You would have just thought he was a street DVD guy. Q was posting Lil B in 2008 or 2009 and he did it consistently, that’s way before anybody else was writing about him. Riff Raff is signed to Mad Decent, Diplo’s label and he’s probably making good show money and that’s all off of WSHH.

Granted, WSHH is a vehicle. It’s a website, one that even I tried to intern for back in the day. You get on it and you’re gonna get a lot of views from it. And granted artists pay good money to be featured on that website and they fake their pageviews. But it doesn't matter because the artists that he’s supporting are fucking winning right now.

I’m sure Riff Raff used to pay to get his videos on there. But other than Trinidad James, name a rapper with ‘User Submitted’ next to their name on WSHH that popped. Not fucking one. Because Q and whoever is behind him didn’t go, ‘Yeah, that guy needs our support.’ So they have the pick of the litter. They aren’t picking the most lyrical rappers, they’re picking characters. I don’t like Lil B or Riff Raff’s music at all, but if you sign them to a label they’re going to make money.
