10 Music Industry Heads Who Should Be A&Rs

Anwar Carrots

Organization: Peas & Carrots
Instrumental in the rise of: Odd Future, Casey Veggies,

You might recognize Anwar's name from Tyler, The Creator’s shout out to him on "Yonkers" where he says, "Wearing synthetic wigs made of Anwar's dreadlocks." Complex even named him No. 17 on the list of The 50 Most Stylish Men In Los Angeles Right Now. The L.A. scene is blowing up and Anwar has been there the whole time.

Anwar was involved with the branding of Odd Future before they blew up. He was just kicking it with them. Young guys like them, they do everything on a friend level. They fuck with people they think are cool. Anwar probably didn't go in and be like, "Lets talk branding." He was probably just kicking it with Odd Future. Eitehr way, there’s a reason he’s getting shout outs from Tyler.

There’s a reason why Casey Veggies, who was involved with Odd Future but is now out on his own, is still winning. Anwar and Josh Peas manage Casey Veggies. They got him working with Roc Nation. Those deals are done through what Anwar and Josh did.

It’s an A&R’s job to make the money back that they spent on an artist. Roc Nation is spending money to make Casey a superstar, but at the end of the day Anwar is the dude that’s going to end up recouping all that money for them.

Anwar is a staple on that Fairfax scene. If he fucks with something, people are going to fuck with it just because. He has lots of followers on Tumblr. Anwar is such a staple in that hipster L.A. scene and you can’t fuck with that.

The great thing he does is he’s behind all the merch. Look at what Casey Veggies is doing on the road and what he’s doing with merch. They go to Toronto and they’re doing "Can’t Ban The Pea Man" T-shirts because Josh Peas can’t get into Toronto. They go to New York and they’re doing New York Giants jerseys but they’re Peas & Carrots jerseys so you’re going to cop them because it’s the Giants and you love the Giants but also because it’s Peas & Carrots. That’s the genius behind Peas & Carrots and Anwar.

Remember, an A&R’s job to make the money back that they spent on an artist. Roc Nation is spending money to make Casey a superstar, but at the end of the day Anwar is the dude that’s going to end up recouping all that money for them. He’s the one who’s going to be like, "We should do all this crazy merch, we should do this show, we should do this record."

On top of all that, he’ll know who will be next up in that L.A. scene. A head of a label can go to Anwar and be like, "What’s going on in L.A. right now?’ And he’ll be like, "This is hot, this is hot, and this is hot." You can sign whoever he co-signs and they’ll be loved by all the tastemakers and all the hipsters.
